1. "as men climbed the social ladder, they displayed their position by their refusal to jaunte. the newly adopted into a great commecial clan rode an expensive bicycle. A rising clansman drove a small sports car. The captain of a sept as transported in a chauffuer -driven antique from the old days, a vintage Bentley or Cadillac or a towering Lagonda. An heir presumptive in direct line of succession to the clain chieftainship staffed a yacht or a plane." This is basically saying that if you are of a high class, what would have been nobility in the 16-1800's, you are supposed to abstain from jaunting. This almost makes it seem as though jaunting isnt classy. ~nicole dengler

Response: I agree with Nicole because it does show that rich people have to hind a way to make themselves better than the regular people that can jaunte. - Catherine Averill

I think as far as the class thing goes with nicole that its to show that they have this money to buy things that they are better than jaunting and that there rich enough to live without it like prestign secretly ridicules other nobility if they jaunt and are open to the public about it

2. "On the technical grapevine (this had to be kept secret) they sent out a call for suicide volunteers. They were still in the primitive stage of teleportation; death was the only spur they knew."p.9 These high tech probably rich scientists had to keep their teleportation research on the d.l. because if they didnt they would most likely get their license or certification taken away. They were taking advantage of the people that felt they had no purpose in the world a.k.a sucidal people. Scientists were probably considered part of the higher class while the sucidal people considered themselves of lower class. In other words they higher class took advantage of the lower class just to get ahead in their class.-Chanelle Meadows

3. Jisbella was the daughter of an architect and had received an education. pg. 76
This shows that since Jisbella's father had a relatively decent job, she was able to go to a good school and get a good education. I think it kind of fits in to social status. Gully clearly did not have that luxury during his education and so he speaks in the gutter tongue.
-Jess Filegar

Response: I agree with Jess that Jisbella maybe of a higher soicial class and the Gully was not, but i think that when Jiz tries to educate Gully and he tries to learn, she might actually be helping him pretend to be of a higher social class.- Chanelle Meadows

response: I disagree with this symbol. She grew up to become a theif and obviously a bad one at that to wind up in prison when even though she grew up in a decent status she still ended up in the gutter social status worked in the opposite way in this case.- Alexander Hall

4. At the begining of chapter 8 (pg. 123-124) it seems like Gully is trying to pass himself off as a higher social class by changing his name to Geoffrey Fourmyle of Ceres who is a wealthy young buffoon from the largest of asteroids. I think he does this so people wont recognize him because he doesnt have those tattoos only when he gets really angry. I think he chose a higher social standing is so people will respect him more because the highser classes are respected more than the lower classes. Also he doesnt seem to speak much gutter touge any more so he will be able to pass off as higher class much eaiser. -Chanelle Meadows

5.At the end of chapter 8 (pg 134-138) Gully hires Robin Wednesbury to "...be the ventriloquist; I'm going to be your dummy. I don't know the upper classes; you do. They have their own talk, their own jokes, their own manners. If a man wants to be accepted by them he's got to talk their language. I can't, but you can. You'll talk for me, through my mouth." He know that she will be able to help him be accepted by the Upper Classes. He knows that if he tries to approch them by himself, they will see the foney he really is, but with her help, he can easily climb the social ladder. *Kayle Giarth*
